We love an autumn glow-up. Hello, earthy terracotta blush, copper eyeshadows and '90s spice lip liners. As for hair, brunette has been remixed once again and mocha brunette has come out on top as the biggest headliner for next season.
Of course brunette has enjoyed some serious experimentation over the past year, with various graduations of the tone making waves. There's been Expensive brunette – the glossy, multi-dimensional shade that looks extra healthy and luxe. There's been Louis Vuitton brunette, which blends warmer caramel, amber and bronze tones (making it another perfect option for autumn). There's been Cassette brunette – the cool-toned almost-black shade that won over the likes of Lily James, Dua Lipa and Megan Fox. And there's been Strawberry brunette (seen on the likes of Kendall Jenner, Zendaya and Barbie Ferreira) which features a fruity infusion of red-pink and sits alongside the ultra popular copper and titian shades that will trend once again next season.
But as far as current colour switch-ups go, it's mocha brunette all the way, with Hailey Bieber, Nicola Peltz and Jessica Alba all embracing the shade over the past few weeks.
What is mocha brunette?
As for what exactly to ask for in the salon – mocha brunette is a rich, deep brunette with warm, chocolate tones which bonus reflect light beautifully for mega glossy-looking strands. “This autumn, we'll see super high-shine solid brunettes taking the stage with dark mocha brunette,” confirms Shvonne Perkins, Lead Educator at Madison Reed. “In terms of maintenance, deep brunettes require upkeep and need glossing and toning often,” says Shvonne (so check out our guide to the best glossy hair treatments and colour-reviving toners).
The hair colour can warm up winter complexions, but might require you to reassess your makeup bag with some extra bronzer (and those copper and terracotta tones we mentioned, alongside rich berries and browns) to carry off the intensity of the chocolate tone as your skin tone cools. Urghh, guess we'll have to treat ourselves to some new makeup then (tough old job).

Nicola traded in her dyed blonde strands for a deep mocha brunette shade, complete with swooshy bottleneck bangs. She debuted the shade at the end of July with the caption “back to my roots.”
Hailey Bieber
Hailey frequently heads toward hybrid blonde-brunette bronde shades in summer and 2022 was no different, but with autumn on the horizon, she's introduced rich mocha-chocolate tones (which are most visible if you swipe to her second slide).
Ciara
Ciara is a chameleon with her hair colour and shifts between honey, blonde and brunette effortlessly. But her mocha brunette midi cut with muted moneypiece highlights is giving us autumn fees.
Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba recently unveiled a much deeper mocha brunette after swapping to caramel blonde back in February this year. The glossy shade looks very luxurious.
Addison Rae
Addison Rae had a short fling with blonde at the beginning of the year, but her strands have been growing deeper ever since. These days, she's committed to mocha brunette.
